MIM - The OK, the BAD and the UGLY!

I normally start out my blog posts welcoming a new follower and or introducing my BLOG CANDY but today I thought I would change it up a bit and start out WHINING! You know, get it out of the way : )

The uber talented Heather Nichols hosted this weeks Make it Monday on the Papertrey Ink blog.  The challenge? "Cluster Stamped Sentiment" You can see her great video HERE.  I thought it looked both fun and easy!  Simply stamp a sentiment in Versamark clear ink then emboss it and finally surround your sentiment with shapes which "grow" from behind the sentiment to scatter over your paper like a burst of confetti... or something like that.  You better watch the video for yourself.

My card making Mojo has been terribly low lately but I can't actually believe that I am going to really post the cards I made for all blogland to see.

Here are my excuses:

1. I have a tremendous lack of ink pads - which with my birthday coming up may improve : )
2. I do not have a large thick-font sentiment stamp from Papertrey Ink which seems important for this technique.
3. ... Ok, I can't think of three but I was whining so much there really must be a 3.

It's ok.  I could send it but I don't like it.

I will start with the "good" card.  This was my third attempt! It is actually the best of the series but darn if I didn't have to use a Stampin Up sentiment.  I prefer using PTI products exclusively for their generous contest. Then red ink I used dyed the embossed sentiment and smeared the shapes behind it  so it looks pink! and spoiled the crisp clean look. : (

I could never use this card.

The BAD. This is actually the second card I made.  I had found on my first card that I needed a thicker font for my sentiment so this was a try for that.  The sentiment is still too little and gets lost.

I have taught card making classes for years and have always told my students that there is no mistake in cardmaking - only opportunities.  I lied.  LOL Ok, maybe not but about those "well placed" sequins? they are covering up all the smudges I made when I didn't realize the ink that was laying on top of the embossed sentiment were smeared all over the card!

The UGLY.  This was where I started.  I tried to select three ink colors that coordinate on the color wheel.  but I'm not wild about this combo.  Next I selected my sentiment - having no idea the poor sweet message would be nearly unreadable.

This one is ok.  Not in love with it but it will do

But in the end I covered up my invisible sentiment with the same sentiment stamped on cs to try to save it.

All in all I failed at this challenge --> but ladies - I worked hard so I decided to post these beasts even with all their problems. : )

Even though I came up short this really was a great challenge.  If you have some time I encourage you to blurf over to PTI MIM and see what others have done with this challenge.

Have a great day! thanks for letting me whine : ) I'm done now. LOL

Well, Patti, I guess we're our own worst critics. I think they're fine - you are way too hard on yourself! I will admit your third card's sentiment was difficult to read but I like the way you fixed it. You learned a new technique and you had some fun - and you are now 3 cards closer to your goal! So it's all good!

You're too hard on yourself, these are all pretty- I really like the one with the hearts, and honestly, I wish I had thought to do one with buttons. : )

Oh! My favorite is the one with the buttons! My need to try another one with that set. Just darling!

Oh patti! You are funny!
I do think we are harder on ourselves than we need to be. I mean it is just paper and ink ;)

I really like the first one. In fact I was thinking "oh! Wish I had though of that"

Great job on the challenge. I guess that's why we do it. To learn and get better!
Nice work ;)

I still need to watch the video & your "failures" haven't discouraged me at all! I just think the sentiments need to stand out more like the last card you showed--maybe just black embossed?--of course, that may not be allowed for what she did. However, if these are your worst failures I am super impressed!

You are too funny and I love that you post all of them! I really love that first card and almost used the same stamp ,your last one is gorgeous as well . I finally bought some SU stamps and love how juicy they are ,I still use all my PTI inks. Hope you get some for your birthday! I love the first one !

You are too tough on yourself. I do think that your top card is the best, but the others are very nice as well. I made several cards myself with this technique, and found that the more solid/bulkey sentiments worked best. Where I got hung up was that my versamark kept coming up black and smudged instead of clear, so I cheated and used white embossing powder.

Your post made me laugh - you're way too hard on yourself, I think these are fab! I totally got ink smudges all over mine - always do! But there's the challenge - covering them so no one knows! ;-)

HA! which one was the ugly? They all look HAPPY to me!

LOL ... you remind me of myself trying this technique. I too had smudging problems, amongst others! The first card is my favourite, but I'm so glad you decided to post all three.

You are definitely way too hard on yourself! I think these are all pretty cool cards. And I certainly liked hearing about your process for creating them!

Great job with the whine, Patti!! I had a whole sleeve of crackers and a hunk of cheese to go along with it while I enjoyed your post!! You are a goofball after my own heart!

I'm not even going to lie and say you are too hard on yourself. I have seen a lot of your cards, which are fantastic, and you definitely were not yourself with these! There I agreed. Does that make me a bad person? Gulp.

Sorry I haven't been able to visit and keep up with your personal card challenge. Between my watercolor class and life in general, I'm really not finding enough hours in the day. Oh, was that me whining? Here, have a cracker and some cheese ...

Hugs, Darnell

I think all three cards are great. You did a great job fixing the "ugly" card as you call it. I don't think it is ugly at all....Keep going with your 100 day challenge.

Patti, in my opinion, you are waaaay to hard on yourself!
If I threw out all of my "mistakes", I wouldn't have very many cards to send out :-)
I'm usually not all that thrilled with my "first attempt" cards for new techniques, but figure I can re-do them after posting to a challenge until they are more to my liking ;-)

We all have slumps where we think what we make isn't "worthy". Sometimes it is best to step away for a while and come back later with a fresh perspective. I know I need to do that from time to time!

Oh my word! These little darlings and NOT beasts. But I understand how you feel. I very rarely look at a finished project and think it's great. That's why we're here to tell you "YOU'RE WRONG"!!! These cards are GREAT. Now go make some more awesome cards.

LOL We are always our worst critics. I think you need to go with there are no mistakes in card making.
